Privacy Policy

Effective Date: January 21, 2026
Last Updated: August 18, 2026
Version: 1.6

1. Introduction

Fairknowe Inc. ("we", "our", or "us") operates Addsworth Accounting for macOS and Addsworth Companion for iOS and iPadOS (each "the Application"). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your information when you use our Application. It applies to both applications.

The two applications use one private database in your iCloud account. Data that you record in one application appears in the other when you use the same Apple Account.

This Privacy Policy is designed to comply with applicable Canadian privacy laws, including the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and, where applicable, Alberta's Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA), British Columbia's Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA), and Quebec's Act Respecting the Protection of Personal Information in the Private Sector (Law 25). It also aligns with Apple's App Store privacy disclosure requirements.

2. Information We Collect

For the purposes of the app privacy details published on the App Store, "collect" means transmitting data off your device in a way that allows Fairknowe Inc. to access it for a period longer than what is necessary to service the transmitted request in real time. Data that is processed and stored only on your device is not "collected" under that definition.

Fairknowe Inc.'s obligations under PIPEDA and applicable provincial privacy legislation are not limited by that definition, and apply to all personal information Fairknowe Inc. in fact collects, uses, or discloses.

2.1 Data You Provide (Stored On-Device and in Your iCloud Account)

The Application processes financial and business data that you enter. This data is stored locally on your device and, if you enable iCloud, synchronized to your iCloud account. Fairknowe Inc. does not have access to this data. Categories include:

  • Financial Info (Apple category: Other Financial Info): Company information (name, fiscal year, tax details), chart of accounts, general ledger entries, journal entries, transactions, and bank account details
  • User Content (Apple category: Other User Content): Financial reports, tax information, and other data you create within the Application

Because this data remains on your device and/or in your iCloud account (not on Fairknowe servers), it is not "collected" by Fairknowe Inc. for the purposes of the app privacy details published on the App Store.

2.2 Diagnostic and Usage Information (Provided by Apple, Not Collected by Fairknowe Inc.)

Fairknowe Inc. operates no servers and receives no data directly from the Application. The Application contains no analytics, advertising, or tracking software, and transmits nothing to Fairknowe Inc.

If you have chosen to share analytics with app developers in your device settings, Apple may provide Fairknowe Inc. with aggregated, anonymized crash, performance, and usage reports through App Store Connect. That sharing is controlled by Apple and by your device settings, is governed by Apple's privacy policy, and can be turned off at any time (macOS: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Analytics & Improvements; iOS: Settings → Privacy & Security → Analytics & Improvements). Those reports do not identify you, and Fairknowe Inc. cannot use them to identify you or your device.

Fairknowe Inc. uses this information only to diagnose faults and improve the Application's stability and performance.

2.2.1 Device Identifier

To coordinate synchronization across your own devices, the Application generates a random identifier for each device on which it is installed. That identifier is created by the Application, is not derived from your device's hardware, serial number, or any advertising identifier, and cannot be used to identify you or to recognize your device outside this Application. It is stored on the device and, where you have enabled iCloud, in the synchronization data held in your own iCloud account. Fairknowe Inc. has no access to it.

2.3 Information We Do Not Collect

We do NOT collect:

  • Personal identification information beyond what you voluntarily enter
  • Browsing history or activity outside the Application
  • Location data (precise or coarse)
  • Biometric data (Face ID/Touch ID authentication occurs locally on your device only)
  • Contact information, contacts, or address book data
  • Health or fitness data
  • Search history within or outside the Application
  • Advertising identifiers, or any identifier derived from your device's hardware, serial number, or operating system installation (see Section 2.2.1 for the app-generated synchronization identifier, which Fairknowe Inc. cannot access)

2.4 Information You Send to Fairknowe Inc.

The Application sends nothing to Fairknowe Inc. Where you write to Fairknowe Inc. yourself, at its support address or at the address in Section 13, Fairknowe Inc. receives your email address and the content of your message. This is the only personal information that reaches Fairknowe Inc. directly from you.

3. How Information Is Used

Three parties handle information, and this Section separates them.

Your device, under your direction. The Application records, stores and reports your financial data on your device, and synchronizes it to your iCloud account where you enable that. Fairknowe Inc. sees none of it.

Fairknowe Inc., from Apple. Where you have chosen to share analytics with app developers in your device settings, Apple may give Fairknowe Inc. aggregated, anonymized crash, performance and usage reports, as described in Section 2.2. Fairknowe Inc. uses them only to find faults and to improve the stability and performance of the Application.

Fairknowe Inc., from you. Where you write to Fairknowe Inc., as described in Section 2.4, it receives your email address and what you write. That correspondence is used only to answer you. Fairknowe Inc. keeps it for two years after your matter is closed, unless the law or a legal claim requires a longer period, and it is not used for marketing.

Legal obligations. Fairknowe Inc. holds none of your financial data and cannot produce it. Where the law requires, Fairknowe Inc. may retain or disclose the correspondence described above.

We do NOT use your data for:

  • Third-Party Advertising
  • Developer's Advertising or Marketing
  • Product Personalization based on collected data
  • Tracking (as defined below)

4. Data Storage and Security

4.1 Local Storage

Your financial data is stored on your device, in the Application's own storage, which uses Apple's Core Data framework. Fairknowe Inc. operates no server and keeps no copy of that data.

4.2 Cloud Storage

When iCloud is enabled for this Application in your device settings, your financial data is synchronized with YOUR iCloud account:

  • We do not have access to your iCloud data
  • Apple's CloudKit security and encryption protocols apply
  • Synchronization is controlled through System Settings (macOS: System Settings → Apple ID → iCloud; iOS: Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud)
  • Data collected by Apple through CloudKit is governed by Apple's own privacy policy; Fairknowe Inc. is not responsible for disclosing data collected by Apple
  • Apple holds your iCloud data on its own infrastructure, which can be outside Canada. Apple's terms govern that storage, and Fairknowe Inc. cannot reach it

4.3 Security Measures

Protection of your data comes from the operating system, from Apple's services, and from your own settings:

  • On iOS and iPadOS, the operating system encrypts the files that the Application holds. That protection depends on the passcode of your device.
  • On macOS, those files are encrypted where you have turned on FileVault.
  • Data that moves to and from your iCloud account is encrypted by Apple, in transit and in storage. Apple's terms govern that service.
  • The Application is updated through the App Store. Install the updates to receive corrections.

4.4 Data Breach Notification

In the event of a security breach involving your personal information that creates a real risk of significant harm, we will:

  • Notify you as soon as feasible after we become aware of the breach;
  • Provide information about the nature of the breach and the personal information involved;
  • Advise you of steps you can take to reduce the risk of harm; and
  • Report the breach to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada as required by PIPEDA.

Because your financial data is stored locally on your device and/or in your iCloud account (not on Fairknowe Inc. servers), a breach of Fairknowe Inc. systems would not expose your financial data.

5. Tracking

We do NOT track you. "Tracking" means linking data collected from the Application about you or your device with Third-Party Data for targeted advertising or advertising measurement purposes, or sharing such data with a data broker.

The Application does not:

  • Link your data with Third-Party Data for any purpose
  • Share data with data brokers
  • Share data with advertising networks
  • Include third-party SDKs that track users across apps or websites

6. Data Linked to Your Identity

Your financial data (stored on-device and in your iCloud account) is inherently linked to your identity by virtue of being on your device. However, Fairknowe Inc. does not have access to this data and cannot link it to your identity.

The aggregated diagnostic and usage reports Apple may provide to Fairknowe Inc. (Section 2.2) are not linked to your identity. We do not associate crash logs or performance metrics with any individual user, account, or device.

7. Third-Party Services and SDKs

The Application uses the following Apple frameworks and services:

  • Core Data: Local data storage (on-device only)
  • CloudKit: Cloud synchronization to the user's iCloud account (data remains in the user's account; Fairknowe does not access it)
  • StoreKit: In-app purchase processing (payment data is handled entirely by Apple; Fairknowe does not receive or store payment information)

The Application includes one third-party software component: ZIPFoundation, an open-source library that packs and unpacks the backup files you create. It runs on your device, sends nothing, and records nothing about you.

The Application does not integrate third-party analytics SDKs, advertising SDKs, or social media SDKs. We do not embed third-party code that collects user data independently.

8. Data Sharing and Disclosure

Fairknowe Inc. holds none of your financial data, and thus cannot share or disclose it. Your financial data is on your device and, where you enable synchronization, in your iCloud account.

The correspondence you send to Fairknowe Inc., described in Section 2.4, is personal information. Fairknowe Inc. does not sell it or rent it, and gives it to no data broker and no advertising network. Fairknowe Inc. discloses that correspondence only:

  • With your consent;
  • Where the law or a court order requires it;
  • Where disclosure is reasonably necessary to protect the rights, property or safety of Fairknowe Inc., its customers, or the public; or
  • In a reorganization, merger or sale of the business. This Privacy Policy continues to apply to that correspondence until you receive notice of a change.

The reports that Apple may provide, described in Section 2.2, are aggregated and identify no one. They are not personal information, and the conditions above do not apply to them.

9. Your Rights and Choices

You have the right to:

  • Access the data stored in the Application
  • Export your data in standard formats (CSV, PDF)
  • Delete your data by removing it from the Application
  • Control iCloud synchronization through your device's System Settings (macOS: System Settings → Apple ID → iCloud → Addsworth Accounting; iOS: Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud → Addsworth Companion)
  • Ask for a copy of the correspondence Fairknowe Inc. holds from you
  • Ask Fairknowe Inc. to delete the correspondence you have sent it, by emailing your request to the address in Section 13
  • Request clarification about our privacy practices

10. Data Retention

Your data remains in the Application until you delete it. Removal of the Application has a different result on each platform:

  • On iOS and iPadOS, the data held on that device goes with the Application.
  • On macOS, the data stays on your Mac. It is held in a folder named for the Application, in the Containers folder of your Library folder, at ~/Library/Containers/com.fairknowe.addsworth. To remove the data, delete that folder.
  • Data in your iCloud account stays in your iCloud account, where you enabled synchronization.
  • You delete the iCloud data in the iCloud storage settings of your device.

11. Children's Privacy

The Application is intended for business use and is not directed to individuals under the age of 18. We do not knowingly collect information from children.

12. Changes to This Privacy Policy

Fairknowe Inc. can change this Privacy Policy. Each change raises the version and the "Last Updated" date at the head of this document. The Application reads that version, compares it with the version you accepted, and asks you to accept the document again where the two differ. You therefore see each new version before you continue to use the Application.

13. Contact Us

The person in charge of the protection of personal information at Fairknowe Inc. is the Privacy Officer. Write to the Privacy Officer with any question, concern or complaint about this Privacy Policy, or about how Fairknowe Inc. handles personal information:

Fairknowe Inc.
Email: privacy@fairknowe.com
Website: fairknowe.com

Fairknowe Inc. answers each complaint and states what it will do. If our answer does not satisfy you, you can complain to a regulator:

  • The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada;
  • The Commission d'accès à l'information du Québec, where you live in Quebec;
  • The Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta or of British Columbia, where you live in that province.

14. Your Consent

You choose what reaches Fairknowe Inc., and you can change that choice at any time:

  • Turn off analytics sharing in your device settings. This ends the reports described in Section 2.2.
  • Ask Fairknowe Inc. to delete the correspondence you have sent it, as described in Section 9.
  • Delete the Application, as described in Section 10. Fairknowe Inc. then receives nothing further about your use of it.

By using either application, you consent to the use of information as described in this Privacy Policy.
